A moving lesson in empathy and forgiveness, DAUGHTERS is the result of an eight-year documentary journey embarked on by filmmaker Natalie Rae and Angela Patton, an activist advocating for “promise” girls. As Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja’Ana prepare for the special event, they speak candidly about their hopes, dreams, and disappointments. There is an innate wisdom and honesty in what they share about their parents’ inconsistent presence; an awareness that goes far beyond their years. DAUGHTERS meaningfully challenges many stereotypes around incarceration and serves as a poignant reminder that maintaining family ties can be both healing and empowering. We witness many joys, but Rae and Patton do not shy away from the more difficult moments, such as heartbreak, skepticism, reluctance to commit, and anger.
